Brief Description
This project is aligned with the United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel (UNISS) and the Secretary General's action agenda on internal displacement. It concentrates on the Liptako-Gourma transboundary area shared among Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, as part of the broader UN endeavours across the Humanitarian Development and Peace nexus and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Liptako-Gourma, characterised by its rich natural resources and youthful population, is experiencing significant challenges due to rapid urbanisation, political instability, and increasing vulnerabilities because of conflict and climate change impact. To address these issues, the project aims to enhance urban and spatial planning and management capacities. Central to this initiative is the establishment of a spatial observatory in the Liptako Gourma Authority (LGA), as part of the second phase of the Spatial Development Strategy for the Sahel (SDSS) during which a Strategic Spatial Action Plan (SSAP) will be prepared for this transboundary area. The observatory will serve as a pivotal tool for monitoring and strategic decision-making, particularly in the context of protracted displacement.
The project adopts a multi-faceted approach with emphasis on capacity building for governments and local authorities to effectively use the observatory for urban and spatial planning and management in the Liptako-Gourma region. It aims to equip national and local governments with the necessary skills to address the challenges of displacement and subsequent urban growth. Special attention is given to integrating women and girls in humanitarian needs, ensuring that capacity-building efforts are inclusive and equitable.
The anticipated outcome is the enhanced technical capacities of officials from regional, national and local bodies in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to produce, analyse, and access spatial/urban data effectively for strategic decision-making. This strategic focus is expected to foster more resilient and sustainable urban environments in the Liptako-Gourma region, contributing to the broader objectives of sustainable urban development in the Sahel.
