Brief Description
This project aims to enhance capacity, knowledge and engagement of African policy and decision makers and key stakeholders at national, sub regional and regional levels to develop and implement appropriate policies, strategies and programmes for the development and promotion of competitive regional agricultural value chains for achieving food security and sustainable development. It will also increase knowledge among member countries on the economic potential of regionally integrated value chains. The project is an innovative approach to agricultural transformation in Africa based on market development and value added products. To realize its objectives, the project team will work in close collaboration with public and private sector partners to design regional projects which are bound across several countries, identify market opportunities and then develop and deploy innovative post-production marketing strategies, technologies and products that will catalyse new markets for local crops and expand existing markets. The project will be implemented by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization ( UNIDO). Other partners and beneficiary institutions will include COMESA-SADC-EAC-SADC, ECOWAS, the member states, development institutions and farming communities at the level of member countries. Also will benefit from the project, continental and international research and development organizations including the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), Africa Rice Centre and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).
