Statistics
Brief Description
Recognizing the importance of high quality statistics and their effective use in promoting evidence-based socio-economic policies and achieving internationally agreed goals, the overall goal of the project is to strengthen national statistical systems in developing countries to enable them to effectively produce statistical indicators on green economy and green growth. The project will enhance the national statistical systems' capacity, tools and infra-structure, which in turn will improve availability to users, especially policy decision makers and researchers, of timely and reliable statistics that are policy relevant and meet the increasing demand for high quality information at the national, regional and international levels. The project will be delivered through a set of activities including assessments of existing data collection activities and data availability, conducting workshops to train countries in the application of relevant components of existing frameworks, identification of the areas where additional measurement improvements are required, defining indicator sets to inform on green economy/green growth issues on a regional basis and helping countries to develop strategies for producing the required data. The project will provide assistance to national statistical offices in 8 pilot countries to implement the findings of the regional workshops and organize regional follow-up seminars to help countries finalize national work plans and to monitor and coordinate the development of economic and environmental indicators that can inform on green growth/green economy issues. A Steering Committee, composed of representatives of the participating offices, will guide the overall execution of the project.
Objective and Expected Outcomes
Objective
To improve the capacity of national statistical offices in developing countries to compile official statistics that inform policy makers on green economy issues, and allow measuring progress towards a green economy, based on a comprehensive set of economic and environmental indicators
Expected Outcome 1
An agreed set of indicators to inform about green economy issues among participating countries that is relevant for developing countries
Expected Outcome 2
Enhanced capacity of selected participating national statistical offices to compile official statistics needed to produce the agreed indicators on green economy
