Brief Description

This project is directly designed to support the Rio+20 Outcome Document and the post-2105 UN Development Framework, and builds on the priorities identified in the synthesis of national reports prepared for Rio+20. The project aims to support countries to mainstream the three dimensions of sustainable development in their national development strategies in support of the Rio+20 Outcome Document, The Future We Want. This will be done through the provision of support to strengthen the institutional arrangements and policy coherence for sustainable development; monitoring and reporting on sustainable development results with particular emphasis on water and energy; forging partnerships and coalitions for sustainable development reporting at national and global levels; and multi-stakeholder platforms for dialogue and learning on sustainable development at the national and global levels; The project aims to provide mechanisms for bottom up learning from the MDG implementation process in order to inform the implementation of future SDG’s focusing on water and energy. It is envisaged that this will enhance national awareness and ownership of sustainable development, to contribute to the preparation of national sustainable development reports, guided by the global sustainable development reporting process. The project will also provide the space for consultations within these countries to reflect and contribute to the framework for national reporting to the high level political forum from 2016 onwards. A learning network and toolkit on institutional strengthening and monitoring and reporting on sustainable development results form an integral part of this project. This network will be backed by training materials and case studies and will be interactive and have a help desk function. The lessons learned will be disseminated and shared within a broader network of countries and other stakeholders and the outputs will provide useful input for all countries reporting to the HLPF from 2016 onwards. Six pilot countries have been identified based on indicative criteria that include i) expression of interest and demand by the country ii) synergy with other DESA’s project through consideration of choosing common pilot countries in at least 50% of the selected cases iii) track record of implementation of MDGs, SDs programmes and presence of good exemplary projects/programmes that can serve as case study or bench mark to raise relevant data iv) presence of high level political support. The selected countries include Belize, Togo, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Vietnam and Liberia.
