Brief Description

Planning for climate change and natural hazards requires that urban planning and development are focused on producing urban systems that have greater capacity to absorb shocks and adapt to impacts. At times of disaster, impacts and losses can be substantially reduced if authorities, individuals and communities in hazard-prone areas are resilient: well prepared, ready to act and equipped with the knowledge and capacities for effective disaster management within a longer-term development perspective. Municipalities in the target countries, often located in naturally vulnerable areas, lack fiscal and institutional resources and the capacity to reduce their fragility in the face of natural hazards and climate change impacts. The objective of this project is to increase the capacities of municipalities of Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau and So Tom e Principe for reducing urban risk and building resilience. In order to achieve this objective the projects intends to firstly increase the levels of technical understanding and knowledge of municipal authorities, leading to an improved capacity to integrate risk reduction and resilience into urban plans and municipal strategies. Secondly, by enhancing the communication and information exchange between cities and towns in each country and across the 3 countries, the project intends to enhance their risk reduction and resilience practices.
