Brief Description

The primary objective of this project is to improve capacity of selected African countries and RECs in economic modelling and forecasting for rigorous policy analysis and formulation in the context of national development planning. The project will develop a comprehensive and streamlined system of integrated models and a network, to enhance the capacity of policy makers among African countries in generating robust medium- to long-run economic policy analysis and economic forecasts. The project will enable African countries to build fully-fledged macroeconomic models and train qualified modellers and forecasters who would provide governments with concise and timely forecasts for economic planning to their institutions. The main stakeholders in this case will be the Ministries of Finance, Economic Planning and Development and the related departments in the RECs in the region. In this respect, ECA in collaboration with UN DESA will build a simple but consistent generic macroeconomic forecasting model that will be used to train modellers from member States who could then easily adapt it to the needs of their individual countries. The models will support member States and RECs in generating credible forecasts, as well as conducting dynamic, forward-looking policy analysis through the application of a system of customized and structurally relevant suite of economic and econometric tools. The project will also lead to the establishment of the African network to enhance model building, forecasting and economic analysis which will improve policy coordination among national agencies by allowing policy makers to evaluate the impact of changing world economic conditions on their countries.
