Brief Description
Sustainable patterns of consumption and production in a world of limited resources is an essential requirement for sustainable development, as recognized by the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Rio+20 and the High Level Panel (HLP) of Experts on the post-2015 development agenda. The objective is to achieve resource efficiency and decoupling of economic growth from environmental degradation and resource use, while creating decent jobs and economic opportunities and contributing to poverty eradication and shared prosperity. In a world in which human population is projected to be 9.5 billion by 2050, and in which about 1.2 billion people currently live in extreme poverty and deprivation, changing consumption and production patterns is vital to protect and manage the natural resource base and ecosystems which underpin development, and to ensure better access to basic services as well as improved quality of life to all. Currently, over 60 percent of the ecosystems and their services upon which we rely are degraded, overexploited or already lost. This project aims to contribute to the implementation of the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) at the country level, by providing financial and technical assistance to developing countries and countries with economies in transition on advancing the development, integration and implementation of SCP policies across and within sectors. The environmental, but also economic and social impacts of an inefficient and polluting use of resources are currently major challenges for national governments. The capacity of policy makers and other key national stakeholders to develop, monitor, review and Implement SCP national plans, strategies and / or components of development policies, as well as to build cooperation along the whole value chain, will be extended and strengthened through this project.
Objective and Expected Outcomes
Objective
To increase the capacity of targeted developing countries to deliver SCP policies at national level, accelerating the shift towards SCP patterns
Expected Outcome 1
Enhanced capacity of stakeholder in two select target countries to develop Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) national plans and/or revise national development strategies (e.g. National Sustainable Development Strategies (NSDs), Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRS)) to incorporate the SCP approach, policies and tools
Expected Outcome 2
Demonstration of SCP implementation through sectoral policies: Enhanced capacity of the stakeholders in three select target countries to implement SCP action plans or related strategies
