Brief Description

The project will enhance food security and climate change adaptation by demonstrating how to build climate resilient, ecologically-sound food systems in sub-Saharan Africa. This project will implement "demonstration projects" in three countries and use the results to inform food security and climate change policies at the national and regional levels. The demonstrations will employ techniques of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA). EbA is the use of biodiversity and ecosystem resources as part of an overall climate change adaptation strategy. EbA activities like watershed rehabilitation, conservation agriculture, or natural pollinator services will be used to enhance the livelihoods, food security and climate resilience of communities. The demonstration projects are premised on the principals of a "fiscal stimulus" towards generating food security and climate change adaptation policies that involve EbA approaches. National institutions alongside technical specialists, academics, and local communities will be involved in implementing the demonstration projects. This approach allows the project to be community- and stakeholder-driven which encourages neighbour-to-neighbour transfer of approaches. Using national entry points to coordinate the activities and a regional approach to connect national entities will help inform and shape national and regional policies that encourage ecosystem productivity and ultimately, food security. A regional approach will be used to take into consideration regional inter-dependence of ecosystem services.

Objective and Expected Outcomes

Objective
To build ecological resilience of food systems and enhance food security through Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) approaches in select countries of sub-Saharan Africa
Expected Outcome 1
Enhanced knowledge of relevant stakeholders on the value of EbA for food security and productivity
Expected Outcome 2
Strengthened government ability to integrate EbA approaches into national food security and climate change policies and plans
Expected Outcome 3
Enhanced exposure of the benefits of EbA on food security in African non-target countries
