Brief Description
Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) has been actively involved in the effort to date surrounding the discussions on launching the Arab Customs Union (ACU) by providing assistance in the discussion and negotiation processes. The objective of this project is to continue to develop the technical capacities of Arab experts involved in the negotiations and those responsible for the design of economic policies to adapt, implement and monitor the ACU in the concerned countries and to understand the implications of its implementation. The project will involve both supporting multi-State discussions in negotiating the various aspects of the ACU and the development of national capacities to implement the agreement.
Objective and Expected Outcomes
Objective
To assist Arab countries and their regional organizations in the negotiation, implementation and monitoring of the Arab Customs Union
Expected Outcome 1
Improved capacity of member States and regional organizations to negotiate and agree on the framework for the Arab Customs Union, including selecting common external tariffs
Expected Outcome 2
Enhanced capacity of member States to take national-level actions required to implement, monitor and evaluate the impact of the Arab Customs Union agreements
