Over the last decade, ESCWA, in cooperation with the national statistical offices (NSOs) and the support of OECD, compiled statistical glossaries covering 13 different subjects, with the goal of developing a comprehensive standardized glossary of scientific terms that is lacking in the Arabic language. However, these glossaries have not been fully adopted as standard statistical terminology, although developed by NSOs in member states. The unavailability of unified global standards for scientific Arabic terms related to development statistics present significant hurdles in the collection, comparability and usefulness of data across the full spectrum of development issues. This is particularly grave considering the efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda and the need to gather data for the SDGs. The present project will address this significant gap in the capacity of member states to collect and disseminate reliable data and metadata that can be used for decision making overtime. The project will support member states in the process of adoption and use of the ESCWA Statistical Glossaries after these have been adopted by the ESCWA Intergovernmental Statistics Committee. It will also provide all relevant governmental stakeholders, in particular NSOs and line ministries, with the tools necessary to design and implement national strategies for the national wide adoption and use of the standards.
