Brief Description

Shifting to sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns is a prerequisite to achieving sustainable development in a world of limited resources. This has been clearly acknowledged at the highest political level through the adoption of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). More recently, during the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, UN Member States stressed the need to accelerate the shift to SCP and to address the obstacles that are preventing the required socio-economic transformation to happen at scale. The present project aims at supporting three targeted countries in addressing some of the key obstacles that have been identified by Member States and stakeholders, through: 1) the strengthening of the national institutional and technical capacities needed to create a culture of SCP across governments and societies; 2) the use of scientific methodologies and tools to support the design and implementation of strategic SCP policies and instruments, identifying high-impact sectors and areas of intervention; 3) access to expert networks and existing solutions to successfully implement policy instruments, together with opportunities to learn from others’ experience, in order to replicate best practices while adapting them to national contexts.

Objective and Expected Outcomes

Objective
To strengthen the institutional and technical capacity of target countries to design, implement and monitor science-based policy instruments for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) in the context of the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on SCP and SDG 12
Expected Outcome 1
Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) is better understood, and a dedicated institutional framework is in place to facilitate capacity-building, implementation and progress monitoring
Expected Outcome 2
The capacity of policy-makers and stakeholders to design / adapt, implement and monitor cost-effective SCP policy instruments is enhanced, with the support of the One Planet network
