Brief Description
Two-thirds of the world’s urban population already live in the Asian and Pacific region and its urbanization is continuing at an unprecedented pace, scale and complexity. Among the challenges urban areas face, include their significant and unsustainable use of resources with accompanying environmental degradation, waste and pollution in general, as well as lack of access by poor and vulnerable populations to natural resources, basic infrastructure and services, as well as decent livelihoods. Most SDGs, including those on sustainable resource management and sustainable consumption and production (SCP), contain targets that are directly related to the responsibilities of local governments. Local governments need to be ready to plan and implement the SDGs in their cities and to review progress at local level – or in other words, they need to be enabled to effectively participate in the “localization of the SDGs”. This project will, therefore, assist city governments and other key urban stakeholders in adapting their local development plans and in implementing linked activities in line with a thematic subset of SDGs on sustainable management of natural resources and SCP. The thematic subset includes SDGs 6 (clean water and sanitation); 7 (affordable and clean energy); 11 (sustainable cities and communities); 12 (responsible consumption and production); and 17 (partnerships for the goals), referred to collectively as “urban resource management”.
Objective and Expected Outcomes
Objective
To strengthen the capacities of local governments and other key urban stakeholders in selected countries of Asia and the Pacific to implement the 2030 Agenda in the area of urban resource management
Expected Outcome 1
Strengthened awareness and institutional capacities of project cities to implement, monitor and report on the Sustainable Development Goals at the local level by incorporating them into local development plans
Expected Outcome 2
Strengthened regional capacity to localize Sustainable Development Goal implementation and reporting and the evaluation of progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals at the urban-level in Asia and the Pacific
