Brief Description

While demographic changes in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region are complex and have profound implications for transformation and development at all levels – local, national, regional and global - these changes are intertwined in a complex web of relations with factors such as health, education, the economy and the environment. This project responds to the demands by member States in both ECA and ESCAP regions to enrich the development policy and decision-making discourse in the coming years with a wide range of knowledge, policy options and alternatives that capitalize on the demographic dividend and gender-related SDGs. The dividend agenda is expected to gain additional policy attention in both Africa and Asia-Pacific regions, given that it can benefit from implementation of the gender dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals. Through this proposed joint initiative, ECA and ESCAP will be able to link their strategic frameworks for the duration of the project. The aim is to strengthen the capacity of member States and regional economic communities to mainstream gender into national policies and programmes, promote youth development, as well as enhance national evidence-based policies aimed at reducing inequalities towards the achievement of sustainable development. The project will achieve this aim through production and dissemination of a variety of knowledge products, statistical tools for monitoring progress as well as establishing and revitalizing virtual and physical platforms for policy dialogue among a large number of stakeholders within and across both regions.
