Brief Description
This project aims to improve the capacity of public institutions in charge of controlling trafficking of illicit drugs and chemical precursors in Colombia, Costa Rica and El Salvador. Central America, due to its geographic location (between the main producers and consumers of cocaine), the current post-conflict scenario in Colombia, and the level of illicit crops in the region, has a high risk of being impacted by the development of new drug trafficking routes. It is a convenient zone for storing, packaging and supplying the illegal drugs demand towards North America. To reach this objective, UNODC Colombia, Panama and Salvador, in collaboration with the authorities in charge of controlling illicit drugs in the three countries, will identify and analyze the patterns related to trafficking of illicit drugs and chemical substances, as well as foster the elaboration and adoption of a common strategy for a substantial intervention in the three countries. This work will enhance the capacities of national police institutions to analyze trafficking of drugs and precursors, including traffic routes and modus operandi, interdiction, control of chemical substances, as well as identify and manage information for the investigation and prosecution of drug trafficking related offences.
