Brief Description
Urban areas are where most of the world’s population now resides (56% or 4.3 billion people) are specifically vulnerable to communicable disease outbreaks, transmission and responses. The pandemic’s impacts and effects will continue to manifest in the coming months and years and be felt directly by urban populations with extended impacts on regional economies and urban-rural supply chains. The joint project, carried out by the five regional commissions and in collaboration with UN-Habitat and UNCDF, will address inter-related dimensions of economic and financial resilience of cities, with an explicit focus on leveraging digital and technology-based solutions and opportunities within the green economy.
Objective and Expected Outcomes
Objective
The project will focus on strengthening the capacities of local governments in 15 cities globally (3 from Africa, Western Asia, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America) to design, implement and monitor sustainable, resilient and inclusive COVID-19 economic and financial recovery and rebuilding plans, ultimately building back stronger.
Expected Outcome 1
Increased understanding of local governments, national governments, private sector, academia, and civil society on COVID-19 impacts, strategies of urban economic recovery and resilience, and opportunities for building economic resilience by project partners and local governments.
Expected Outcome 2
Expanded participation in the economic resilience building process by relevant local and national stakeholders in partner cities and countries and strengthened technical capacity of local governments, national governments, private sector, academia, and civil society to participate in urban economic recovery and resilience planning.
Expected Outcome 3
OC3 and OC4 - Increased capacity on potential sources of finance to implement economic recovery and resilience building strategies by partner cities, and increased knowledge of local governments on successful local economic recovery and resilience building.
