Brief Description
The COVID-19 pandemic represents a supply and a demand shock - both aspects influencing international trade in goods and services. Furthermore, cargo and document handling during global maritime trade can facilitate virus transmission across borders, lockdowns in both major producing and trading countries have crippled international supply chains and regional coordination on the transport response to COVID-19 has been limited. The joint project brings together UNCTAD, the UN focal point for trade and development, and the five UN Regional Commissions (ECA, ECE, ECLAC, ESCAP and ESCWA), thereby ensuring both global reach and regional presence, international cooperation, and exchange of knowledge and good practices from all over the world.
Objective and Expected Outcomes
Objective
To implement UN solutions, including standards, tools, methodologies and policy recommendations, with immediate effect and helping governments, including Customs and other border agencies, ports authorities and broader logistics industry stakeholders, and the business community world-wide, to keep transport and borders operational to facilitate the international flow of goods, while containing the further spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Expected Outcome 1
Cluster A: Contactless - Enhanced implementation and development of UN Conventions, standards and recommendations for contactless solutions, on national and regional levels, lead to safer and more efficient cross-border transport and trade operations.
Expected Outcome 2
Cluster B: Seamless - Improved capacity for efficient cross-border trade and transport flows, including commercial law and NTMs, towards the development of seamless solutions to COVID-19 challenges
Expected Outcome 3
Cluster C: Collaborative - Increased regional and sectoral collaboration leading to a greater cooperation and synergies in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic
