Brief Description

This project aims at increasing the sustainability of freight transport in the ESCAP region by, among others, improving the modal split of freight transport along the existing regional transport networks established under the Intergovernmental Agreements on the Asian Highway Network, the Trans-Asian Railway Network and the Dry Ports. The project will undertake national assessments and recommend measures for enhancing shift towards sustainable freight transport in selected ESCAP member States, considering, among others, the existing modal split of freight transport. The project would also develop regional strategy reflecting consensus on a broad range of issues including but not limited to optimizing modal split, use of new technologies, economic measures, land use planning and related regulations to encourage sustainable freight transport in the region. Based on the recommendations of the national assessments and regional strategy, the project will support selected countries in strengthening policies/strategies to promote sustainable freight transport by: (a) enhancing capacity of stakeholders, particularly, of the transport policymakers to formulate and implement such policies and (b) strengthening regional cooperation to foster sustainable freight transport and mobilizing political support for this.
