Brief Description

The conflict in Syria continues to generate the largest forcibly displaced population in the world. Jordan and Türkiye host over four million Syrians, mostly in urban areas. While continuing to respond to the humanitarian crisis, bridging the humanitarian-development divide is critical for the entire community, including the host population. Eight years into the Syria crisis, there is a need to reprioritize longer-term environmental, economic and social priorities towards sustainable development. This project will build on existing networks and momentum to (re)invigorate and (re)formulate national and local priorities and capacities for sustainable development and strengthening resilience. The project aims at strengthening capacities of local and national authorities to pursue inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable development in urban areas hosting Syrian refugees in Jordan and Türkiye. The improved tools and capacities will help to change the current fragmented and short-term approaches to sustainability and environmental objectives. As a result of the project, government, humanitarian and NGO actors on national and local levels are expected to have new tools, knowledge and skills to strengthen urban governance and integrate long-term sustainability and environmental priorities into their work. Key organizations in each of the two target countries are expected to train staff to operationalize and apply new and also previously existing strategies, action plans or guidelines for pursuing sustainability and environmental objectives in an urban displacement context. Cross-sectoral coordination and coherence are expected to improve as an outcome of this project which will take a holistic approach to building resilience and achieving SDG targets on national level.
