Brief Description
This project aims to increase the capacity of four Small island developing states (SIDS) that are the members of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) - Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands - to identify and strengthen synergistic linkages between green trade promotion and their sustainable development in a regionally collaborative manner. All four target countries indicate the importance of green economic growth and trade promotion in their national sustainable development strategies. However, they have not yet defined policy frameworks that would enable synergistical interactions between green export promotion and socioeconomic and environmental sustainability. The project activities focus on developing green trade promotion policy as an integral element of their national sustainable development strategies. This will be achieved through identifying green trade promotion strategies via selecting effective strategies regarding the voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) and mapping out synergetic linkages between (i) green trade promotion and (ii) sustainable development policy. The project will support countries to achieve coherence and cross-feeding of policy actions between the two fields. Mapping of synergistic linkages will be supported by increased transparency on non-tariff measure (NTMs) and preparedness to sustainable standards. Another important aspect of the project is to support the MSG Secretariat in strengthening regional collaboration frameworks to channel national actions to regional benefits. The project will be built upon key findings from UNCTAD projects that were implemented in the region to ensure continuation and wider dissemination of benefits from the past activities to all the members of the MSGs. The project will be implemented in close partnership with the -Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, other United Nations agencies and regional cooperation groupings in the Pacific.
