Brief Description

The Arab region is taking extreme safety measures due to the outbreak of COVID-19, with a quarantine at a scale that has never been seen before to flatten the curve and avoid many thousands of cases. Small and medium enterprises, self-employed, and daily wage earners are hit the hardest; therefore, urgent regional development support is critically needed to foster SME resilience and prop up economic activities at all levels. Moreover, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) are essential drivers for economic growth and job creation. They have been growing massively over the past few decades and have reached around 90% of global registered enterprises, but they only contribute less than a third of global exports. In the Arab region, most countries are increasingly acknowledging the importance of diversifying their economies and fostering greater private sector participation to address national and regional challenges. In this context, this project focuses on building the capacities of regional SMEs that are participating in achieving regional SDGs and empowering government agencies and the enabling environment to support local SMEs to achieve higher growth and sustainability during and after the pandemic.

Objective and Expected Outcomes

Objective
To strengthen capacity of government agencies and small and medium-sized enterprises to expand the market and improve the regulatory environment in which those enterprises operate
Expected Outcome 1
Strengthened government entities’ capacities to provide quality and timely services to SMEs by simplifying the existing business regulations to reduce the administrative burden that enterprises face and facilitate e-governments.
Expected Outcome 2
Strengthened capacities of SMEs to deal with key challenges facing them, namely: encounters to access adequate funding, challenges to access foreign and regional markets, accessibility to appropriate talents, inadequate business environment, and others based on the assessment reports.
