Brief Description
The implementation of the SDGs requires “leaving no one behind” and overcoming the inequalities that characterize the Latin American and Caribbean region. Inequalities have become more acute due to the enormous impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy and the living conditions of the population. Traditional data sources used by countries to produce statistics and inform public policies face several limitations in the availability of information on inequalities and their disaggregation for relevant population groups. To address this, the project focuses on three different aspects of integration of data sources that can be used to measure inequalities: improving income and wealth inequality measures; integration of geospatial and statistical data; and producing disaggregated statistics through Small Area Estimation (SAE) techniques. The main stakeholders are national statistical offices and national geographical institutes. It is expected that participating countries will implement at least one of the following actions: revise or prepare a national strategy to integrate geospatial and statistical information; implement the disaggregation of a specific SDG indicator by integrating different data sources; implement an estimation of income inequality by combining different information sources. The project will be implemented by ECLAC Statistics Division, in close collaboration with relevant partners.
Objective and Expected Outcomes
Objective
To improve the capacities of selected countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to produce inequality statistics to support evidence-based policies for the reduction of inequalities and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda
Expected Outcome 1
Increased capacities of selected countries to integrate different sources (national accounts, tax information and household surveys) to improve income and wealth inequality measures, and to analyze the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on income inequality.
Expected Outcome 2
Increased capacities of selected countries to integrate geospatial and statistical data and information, through the adoption of regional and global frameworks, standards and methodologies for evidence-based policies to address the 2030 Agenda and for generating disaggregated data to support COVID-19 management with a view in the territory
Expected Outcome 3
Strengthened capacities of selected countries to produce disaggregated statistics for relevant population groups, to support public policies for the recovery after COVID-19 pandemic using SAE techniques.
